Barbara Onumah, MD is a dedicated endocrinologist with a passion for delivering high-quality care to patients with diabetes and endocrine disorders. She was born and raised in Ghana, West Africa, where she completed part of her secondary education at Welsey Girls High School before relocating to the United States with her family. Dr. Onumah earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology at Rutgers University.
Dr. Onumah graduated from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (now known as Rutgers Medical School) and completed her internal medicine residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. She further honed her expertise through a fellowship in diabetes and endocrinology at the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases in Bethesda, Maryland.
A true advocate for patient care, Dr. Onumah is committed to providing excellent clinical care in endocrinology. She is also passionate about education and has had the opportunity to teach and mentor medical students, residents, and endocrinology fellows at a university-based fellowship training program. For Dr. Onumah, endocrinology offers not only the chance to make a meaningful impact on her patients’ lives but also a field that allows her to be a lifelong learner. She deeply values the daily opportunity to expand her knowledge, whether through patient interactions, mentoring her trainees, or collaborating with colleagues.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Onumah is an active member of the Endocrine Society and the American Medical Association, where she contributes to advancing the field of endocrinology.
Outside of her professional life, Dr. Onumah is a firm believer in the importance of family and cherishes her time spent with her husband, Kojo, and their two sons, Kronkron and Jidi. A proud Maryland resident, she enjoys listening to contemporary gospel music and spending quality time with family and friends.
